As the Local Management Entity PBH has a desire to educate as many officers and other first responders as possible in the areas of Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Developmental Disabilities. The goal for the program is to train 25 percent of all area law enforcement as CIT officers.
40-HOUR CIT TRAINING PROVIDES OFFICERS WITH TOOLS...
- The skill to identify and effectively interact with people with substance abuse, mental health and/or developmental disabilities
- Basic medication awareness
- Verbal de-escalation skills
- Use of less than lethal weapons/force
- Face-to-face interactions with consumers and family members
- Role Play
CIT is traditionally a 5 day 40 hour week course module but also offers a 2 day 16 hour option for specific groups. Within those hours a trainee will receive the following:
- CIT Overview
- Techniques to assist with identifying and effectively interacting with certain disability groups
- Basic psychotropic medication awareness
- Crisis De-escalation techniques
- Use of less than lethal weapons/force
- Face-to-face interactions with consumers and family members
- Mental Health Diagnoses and Overview
- Community resources and local provider options
- Mental Health Medication and Side Effects
- Special Concerns with Adolescents
- Suicide Risk/Assessment and Intervention
- Trauma/PTSD
- Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Disorders
- Personality Disorders
- Active Listening
- Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities
- Special Concerns with Geriatrics
- Special concerns with Veterans
- Autism
- Provide an opportunity for the trainees to implement what they have learned throughout the week
